Hooker touts PAID lottery to fund political races CHATTANOOGA (AP) Democratic gubernatorial candidate John Jay Hooker announced his support Thursday for a state lottery if some of the proceeds were used to fund political campaigns. help candidates the corThe public financing, would rupting influence of political contributions, he said.

"The people should have the right to vote on a lottery if they want to," he said in his first trip to Chattanooga since winning the August primary. "Every state election in Tennessee could be financed for less than $100 million." A proposal that would have brought the issue before voters failed in the General Assembly last spring. Studies show a lottery would generate hundreds of millions of dollars annually. Hooker, of Nashville, has made campaign finance reform his key issue and believes all government problems are rooted in the influence of money on campaigns. The 68-year-old businessman, who was publisher of the nowdefunct Nashville Banner and had numerous other business ventures, is using his own money to finance his race.

He has no campaign organization or advertising budget and has spent a few thousand dollars so far. Republican Gov. Don Sundquist has spent more than $2 million on his race and has barely acknowledged Hooker's challenge. DEATHS BALLARD EVA L. BALLARD, 60, passed away Tues.
